started in the Department.

B.Sc., Pass and Honours
courses were started.

Shifting of the Department
from the old building of the college to the newly constructed Natural Science
Buildings.

1943
|
Research work in problems
connected with Geology were started which later on paved the way for thesis
leading to the M.Sc., Degree.

1953
|
The Department becomes a
full fledged research department providing facilities for the highest
research Degree, namely the Ph.D Degree and it started attracting many
research scholars.

1956
|
Upgradation of the post of
Professor of Geology to the Chief Professor of Geology as per the recommendation
of Sir.C.V.Raman Commission and the first Chief Professor P.G.Dowie was
appointed to the post.

1958
|
Introduction of the three
year degree course, abolition of the B.Sc., (Hons) and introduction of the
two year M.Sc., course
|
1969
|
The Government of Tamil Nadu
nominated the Chief Professor of Geology to serve as a member in the State
Geological Programming Board.
|
1971
|
Dr. S. Saravanan, Chief
Professor of Geology was also appointed as Member Secretary of the Task Force
on Mineral Resources of the State Planning Commission, in addition to his
normal duties.

1977
|
Part-time M.Phil Course for
teachers was introduced
|
1977
|
Project Entitled “Trace
Element Geochemistry of the rocks of selected areas of Tamil Nadu” at a cost
of Rs. 5 Lakhs was sanctioned by the Department of Science and Technology,
Government of India.

1987
|
Full time M.Phil Course was
introduced.
